1. Who we are

Knock is run by [company name], a company registered in England and Wales (company number [company number]). Our address is [postal address] and you can email us at [email]. In these terms “we”, “us” and “our” mean [the business]; “you” means the person using Knock.

By creating an account you agree to these terms and to our house rules, which form part of them. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your information; it isn’t part of this agreement, but please read it. This is version v1.

2. What Knock is, and what it isn’t

Knock is a tool for listing a gathering, asking to come to one, and letting people in at the door. The person who lists a party (the host) is its organiser. The people who come (the guests) choose to go.

• We are not the organiser, host, promoter or venue of any party listed on Knock.
• We don’t visit, inspect or approve any home or venue, and we don’t check who anyone is. A “student” badge only means someone showed they can receive email at a UK university address. It is not an identity check, a background check or a promise about how anyone will behave.
• We don’t supervise parties and we aren’t there. Anything that happens at a party is between the people who are there.
• Knock is free. We don’t take payments of any kind, and nor may anyone else here.

3. Who can use Knock

• You must be 18 or over. You’ll be asked to confirm this when you sign up. If we have reason to think someone is under 18, we will close their account.
• You must give your real first name and use a photo of yourself.
• One account per person. Your account is for you alone, so don’t share it.
• You can’t use Knock if we have previously removed you from it.
• Knock is for people in the UK.

4. Your account

Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens on your account unless someone else got into it without it being your fault. Tell us straight away at [email] if you think someone has. You can delete your account at any time from your profile, and everything linked to it is deleted as described in the privacy policy.

5. If you host

As the host you are the organiser of your party, and you are responsible for it. You agree that:

• You have the right to hold it where you’re holding it. If you rent, live in halls or share a house, that means your tenancy or halls rules allow it and the people you live with agree.
• You won’t charge anyone anything: no entry fee, no money on the door, no “donations”, no paying for drinks, no tickets. Charging for entry, drinks or music where alcohol or entertainment is provided can need a licence or a Temporary Event Notice under the Licensing Act 2003, and anyone who runs it or knowingly allows it can be committing an offence.
• You won’t give or sell alcohol to anyone under 18, and you won’t allow illegal drugs.
• You’ll keep to the number of people you set, keep your home reasonably safe for the number you let in, and look after your neighbours. Noise and nuisance are your responsibility.
• Your listing is honest about what the party is, where it roughly is, and when.
• You understand that the people you approve will see your address, and that you choose who that is. Only approve people you’re comfortable letting into your home.
• If your party is over early or isn’t happening, you’ll use “end it now” in Knock, which hides your address and shows your guests it’s over on their pass, and you’ll let your guests know yourself.

6. If you’re a guest

• A host can say yes, maybe or no to anyone, and change their mind. Asking doesn’t entitle you to come.
• If you’re let in, keep the address to yourself and don’t pass on your pass. Your pass works once, for you and the number of people you told the host about. If the host allows plus-ones, you can bring up to three people on your pass; you’re responsible for them, and they must follow these terms and the house rules too.
• Follow the host’s house rules, and leave when you’re asked to.
• You’re responsible for yourself: how much you drink, how you get there and home, and what you bring. Look out for the people around you.

7. What you post

What you add to Knock (your photo, your profile, your listings, your notes) stays yours. You give us permission to store it, show it to the people Knock shows it to (explained in the privacy policy), and make the copies needed to run the service, for as long as it’s on Knock. That permission ends when you delete it or your account, except for anything we keep as explained in the privacy policy.

You’re responsible for what you post. It must be true, it must be yours to share, and it must follow the house rules. Don’t post anyone else’s photo, name or details without their permission.

8. Keeping people safe, and illegal content

Knock is designed so that less can go wrong: addresses are hidden until a host lets someone in, there’s no messaging, there’s no money, and social media handles are only shown to the host of a party you’ve asked to come to. But we can’t see what happens away from the app, and we don’t check everything posted on it.

In an emergency, call 999. For something that isn’t an emergency, call the police on 101.

How we deal with illegal and harmful content

• Every party, and every request to come to one, has a report button, and you can block people from there. Reports go to us, not to the person you reported. You can also email us.
• A person reviews reports as quickly as they can, and we take down illegal content once we know about it. We don’t use automated tools to scan or detect content. That includes threats, harassment, intimate images shared without consent, the sale of drugs or weapons, fraud, content that sexualises children, terrorism and hate crime.
• Depending on what’s happened we may remove content, end a listing, hide an address, suspend an account or close it permanently.
• Where the law requires it, or where someone is at risk of serious harm, we may keep relevant information and share it with the police or other authorities.

We will tell you, by email, if we remove your content or restrict your account, and why, unless doing so would be unlawful or would put someone at risk. You can ask us to look again (see section 13). You don’t need an account to report something: email us at [email].

9. Things you must not do

• Break the law, or use Knock to help anyone else break it.
• Pretend to be someone else, or make more than one account.
• Share someone’s address, pass or personal details outside Knock.
• Charge for anything, advertise, or use Knock to promote a business or paid event.
• Copy or collect information from Knock in bulk, get around its privacy or security controls, test it for weaknesses, or interfere with how it works.

10. Suspending or closing accounts

You can stop using Knock and delete your account whenever you like. We may suspend or close an account, or remove content, if we reasonably believe someone has broken these terms or the law, or to protect other people. Where it’s safe and lawful to, we’ll tell you why. If we close Knock altogether we’ll give you notice first where we can.

11. The service itself

Knock is provided free. We’ll use reasonable care and skill running it, but we can’t promise it will always be available, error-free or that a feature will stay the same. We may change or improve it. If a change affects you significantly we’ll tell you in the app.

12. Our responsibility to you

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn’t allow us to limit. Your legal rights as a consumer are not affected.

Apart from that:

• Hosts and guests are responsible for their own actions. We aren’t responsible for what hosts or guests do or don’t do, or for what happens at a party (including injury, loss or damage to people or property), unless it was caused by our own failure to use reasonable care and skill or by our breaking these terms.
• We’re only responsible for loss that was a foreseeable result of our failing to meet these terms or to use reasonable care. We’re not responsible for business losses, because Knock is for personal use only.
• Because Knock is free, where the law allows us to limit what we pay, our total liability to you for everything else is limited to £100. This limit doesn’t apply to your rights under data protection law, or to anything else the law doesn’t let us limit.

13. Complaints, and asking us to look again

If you’re unhappy with anything (something you’ve seen on Knock, how we handled a report, content of yours we removed or an account we restricted, or you think we aren’t meeting our duties under the Online Safety Act 2023), tell us at [email] or through the contact page. We’ll acknowledge your complaint, look at it properly, and tell you what we decided and why. For complaints about your personal information, see the privacy policy.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when the law or Knock changes. If a change matters, we’ll tell you in the app and ask you to agree to the new version before you carry on using Knock. If you don’t agree, you can delete your account.

15. The legal bits

• These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales, or, if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, in the courts where you live.
• If a court decides part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies.
• If we don’t enforce something straight away, we can still do so later.
• Only you and we have rights under these terms; nobody else can enforce them.
• We may transfer our rights and responsibilities under these terms to another organisation if Knock changes hands. We’ll tell you if we do, and it won’t reduce your rights.
